How much does a genealogist cost?

Genealogists charge a wide range of fees, often reflecting experience and approach. As a qualified genealogist (MSc in Genealogy with Distinction) and member of RQG and AGRA, I have the training to access and interpret records that unqualified researchers may overlook. My fees reflect this expertise, ensuring your research is carried out to professional standards with clear, reliable results. In genealogy, the old adage is usually true: “you get what you pay for.”

Genealogist Fees and Research Packages:

Family Tree Packages: £280 to £1,450

Each package includes fully referenced genealogical research and clear reporting. How your family’s story is presented is entirely up to you – from simple reports to beautifully designed books. You can explore the full range of presentation options here.

Introductory Family Tree: £280
A perfect introductory package, focusing on a single couple – most often the client’s grandparents – and extending up to four generations if the client and their parents are also added.
Traditional Family Tree: £1125
My most popular option, tracing one surname line back four generations with additional detail on siblings. Research typically reaches the late 1700s or early 1800s and includes records such as baptisms, marriages, burials, census returns, occupations, emigration, and maps, along with wider historical context.

Direct Ancestors Tree: £1,450
This in-depth option traces only your direct line: parents, four grandparents, and up to eight great-grandparents. As with the Traditional Tree, records may include baptisms, marriages, burials, census returns, occupations, schooling, maps, and wider historical context to bring your family’s story to life.

Bespoke Research – £45 per hour

For questions that don’t fit neatly into a package, I offer fully tailored research to suit your needs. This can include detailed investigations, breaking down brick walls, or extending work already completed. Time covers research, analysis, reporting, and client communication, with a budget agreed in advance so you stay in control of costs.

All costs are agreed openly before work begins. Any additional expenses will always be confirmed with you first.

Projects under £100: payment in full before research begins
Projects over £100: 50% deposit in advance, with the balance due before delivery
