My name is Nicola Johnson, and I am a professional, qualified genealogist and DNA detective with a Master’s degree in Genealogy, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies from the University of Strathclyde, the leading institution for genealogical studies worldwide.
My work combines traditional family history research with advanced genetic genealogy to help clients solve family mysteries, interpret complex DNA results, and trace their ancestry with confidence. I approach every case with care, integrity, and attention to detail.
My Master’s dissertation focused on the families of the Titanic, analysing the long-term impact of the disaster and the Titanic Relief Fund on the children of deceased crew members. This has developed into a specialist area of my practice, combining in-depth archival research with genealogical reconstruction and occupational analysis.
Before becoming a genealogist, I spent over 20 years as a senior broadcast journalist with BBC Television News and Associated Press, developing strong investigative and storytelling skills that now underpin my genealogical work. I am media trained both in front of and behind the camera, and therefore well-placed for interviews, media contributions, or public speaking engagements relating to genealogy, DNA, or maritime history.
Outside of research, I enjoy travelling and spending time with friends and family.
I am a member of:
“I would certainly trust Nicola to trace your family history, find out the real truth about those ‘skeletons in the cupboard’ – if you dare!!!”
“Nicola is a tenacious genealogist – she traced a family I didn’t know I had with such professionalism.”
